Along with the temples at Somnathpur and Halebid, these form a trio of the best examples of the star-shaped temples.
And Maddss123, the stone was called Chlorite Schist...they could actually mount and turn it on a lathe immediately after quarrying. That's what gives them those knife like serrations. Rajah Iyer's blog has the snaps of the pillars too.

Very good info, should have put more photos. The place is a treasure to be seen to  believe................... The stone has special properties it  is mined, it retains softness for some time till it oxidizes and  looses moisture ..........

I agree with you. In India, it is very sad situation that we neglect our historic monuments and many of them are in pathatic conditioin.
